Through salt-stained Sootopolis streets, Rowan Wrynn stalks a shadow that had once been a man. A man that had once been his brother, before that connection had been severed by a bullet through the brain.[break][break]

Only bullet wounds were not always so neat, and neither were the bonds of brotherhood.[break][break]

Rowan might've thought Cillian oblivious to his presence. Rocket's underboss certainly moves like a man without a care in the world, patrolling the city's streets as if he owns them. His shadow moves out of sync with him like something alive.[break][break]

As they turn down an alley, the illusion of ignorance breaks as that shadow moves to close off escape. Behind Rowan, a mass of solid SHADOW HOLDS the line, and before him—[break][break]

Cillian Quinn.[break][break]

Even his eyes of Quinn amber bear the mark of corruption, a deep purple ring around the iris near-black in the low light. Cillian stares, unblinking, at a man he'd meant to bury. Yet though the murder weapon still rests in the holster against his chest, brazen in its display on Rocket's streets, Cillian doesn't reach for it.[break][break]

In place of fingers are shadowed claws, darkness stretching up past his elbows and swallowing scars and skin alike. MIASMA curls at his feet.[break][break]

"I thought I killed you."[break][break]

Like Navy before him, Cillian's marks had a horrible habit of coming back from the dead.

An amber eye carefully watched Cillian's features, searching for a reaction at the mention of another shadow of their past, another stain on their record. [break][break]

"Then again..." A single step forward, posture calm and collected despite what the violence the man had previously inflicted upon him. "...perhaps Rowan Wrynn did truly die on that mountain. I'm not sure I feel him anymore." Steeled gaze broke, instinctively glancing towards the tremor in his hand that was ceased with the clench of a fist.[break][break]

An inhale broke Rowan's momentary silence, breathing in deep through his nostrils as his eye set on Cillian once more. "I missed the smell of this place. The stone and the salt."

Cillian did not believe Rowan possessed the heart to kill him. To hurt him, perhaps, but not to callously take his life as had been done in reverse. Still, he is cautious as his gold-violet gaze trains on the other's every movement.[break][break]

Still, he does not draw his gun.[break][break]

"Merlo," he spits, venomous. "He should be dead as well, the traitor."[break][break]

Yet he can't bring himself to be shocked that Suicune's chosen had spared another from Rocket's vengeance. That damn beast needed to be put down.[break][break]

He's not sure what to make of his brother. Rowan was acting strange, and Cillian's paranoia leads to doubt. Was this some trick designed by Walsh, to test him? But, no, the Rocket Boss thought Rowan dead. Cillian had sent him the grisly photo of the aftermath.[break][break]

His eyes narrow. His voice bears an unnerving eldritch echo as he demands to know, [break][break]

"Why are you here?"

Since his brush with death, Rowan's mind had become a storm of shattered thoughts and memories, shards of broken glass that refused to be fitted together no matter how hard he tried. "I think I came back wrong, I..." His words trailed off, gaze unfocusing as he became lost in the tempest. [break][break]

Rowan's head snapped back to his brother, focus regained for the moment. "There's something missing inside me. A piece that didn't come back from the veil." He knew there was a place beyond death, he'd seen it with his own eyes when the skies tore asunder above Mt. Pyre. It was the place he'd retrieved Cobra from, and perhaps where what he lost remained.[break][break]

"I'd hoped coming back here would help me find it." Instead of familiar surroundings, he'd found a familiar person, his brother. Cillian was his flesh and blood, the link he had to terra firma that proved he existed outside of his own psyche. [break][break]

"He could keep me grounded..." A thought escaped from his mind and was spoken aloud, albeit under hushed breath.

"It was a bold move to come here."[break][break]

This was the heart of Rocket's hive, their bastion of strength. That a traitor would dare step foot on its bleached stones was either brave or incredibly stupid.[break][break]

"A foolish one."[break][break]

If he killed Rowan a second time, this time in a city which Isaac Merlo would be equally foolish to trespass, his brother would not be so lucky as to escape the jaws of death.[break][break]

He is loyal to Rocket. To Walsh.[break][break]

But Rowan buys himself time with a mumbled statement that Cillian barely catches. Is he talking about me? Opportunity blossoms like flowers blooming over a grave.[break][break]

If he'd sought comfort and safety here, of all places... "You lost what made you weak. What made you run."

Cillian's statement rippled through his mind, like a drop of water disrupting the surface of calm waters. Why else would he have come here? There was not a single individual in this city that wouldn't kill him on sight, and he'd sought out the person that had the most to lose by revealing his resurrection. [break][break]

The idea became firmly rooted in his thoughts, slithering between the shards like a snake, coiling around the pieces and gathering them together. He wasn't suicidal, he just wasn't afraid.[break][break]

"It feels...good." Rowan looked down at his hands, the tremors that plagued him suddenly becoming as still as the Sootopolis air.[break][break]

"I suppose you did always know me better than I knew myself." A melancholic smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he set his gaze upon his brother once more, truly forgetting the depth of danger that he was in.[break][break]

This could be some trick, Cillian thinks. A way for Rowan to draw himself back into Cillian's good graces only to stab him when his back was turned. He'd betrayed him once before.[break][break]

But there's something raw and honest in shaking hands that still beneath the revelation.[break][break]

We could use this.[break][break]

On the side of the League, Rowan was a sign of the syndicate's weakness. But if he were to flee to the League only to run back into Rocket's arms after they'd killed him, of all things, how might that reflect to the others questioning their loyalties?[break][break]

The League wasn't worth dying for.[break][break]

A smaller, sadder part of him thinks it'd be nice to have his brother back, to laugh and drink with him again. That part is buried beneath the weight of his loyalty to Rocket.[break][break]

Rocket came first. Rocket always came first.[break][break]

"Is it forgiveness you seek, then?" He shakes his head. "You know that's not mine to grant."[break][break]

If Rowan wanted a pardon, he'd need to plead his case to the boss.

The tenseness drained from Rowan's body, relaxing his posture despite the eyes of the beast that were still laid upon him, prepared to strike at a moments notice. "I won't beg for forgiveness again." He'd done so once before, only to be spit upon and ostracized by those in the League. [break][break]

"Atonement." He clarified, unfamiliar confidence in his tone. [break][break]

"My death absolved me of my sins, released you of your burden and duty, did it not?" A slight turn on his shifted his gaze towards the docked submarine, darkened metal hull shimmering in the moonlit waters of Sootopolis City. "The debt has been paid, now all that's left is a show of fealty. Walsh will..." [break][break]

A hand raised to grip his head, wincing as searing pain rippled though his skull, Rowan's vision becoming hazed as memories excruciatingly surfaced. The murder he'd committed here in Sootopolis, the grunt he'd tortured with Theo Beckett, the kidnapping he'd staged on Melody Miro.[break][break]

"Suicune was right, Angelo! My soul is tainted!" The words were forced out through gritted teeth, practically shouting. A silence came over Rowan, ragged shallow breaths as he straightened his posture and faced Cillian again.[break][break]

"...see my value, or not." Rowan didn't seem particularly aware of this outburst, continuing his sentiment without missing a beat in his tone. There was something very clearly broken, not even the healing properties of a legend could fully undo the damage that Cillian's bullet had done.

It is good that Rowan doesn't seek forgiveness, for Cillian could not forgive. He was Rocket. To betray Rocket was to betray him, but Rowan had gone a step further with the personal betrayal of one brother to another. Such things were unforgiveable.[break][break]

But forgiveness was not required for atonement.[break][break]

He sees the potential in the broken uncertainty of the boy before him. A legend could not heal the damage done by a bullet, but careful reprogramming might rewire a broken brain to skirt the damaged parts. Forge new neural pathways over the shattered remains of the old, and remake Rowan Wrynn just as they'd once done for Gavin Merlino.[break][break]

Cillian tenses as Rowan shouts, shadowed claws curling around the grip of a gun as his adrenaline spikes and violet swallows the amber of his eyes.[break][break]

Rowan seems oblivious to how close he'd come to death in that moment.[break][break]

Broken, indeed.[break][break]

Cillian lowers the gun from where he'd leveled it at Rowan's undamaged eye, then holsters it.[break][break]

"Legends manipulate to get what they want." He is not so naive to think Lugia has not manipulated him. The shadows of his visage are proof enough of that. "Suicune played into your weakness and then abandoned you as soon as it grew bored. It seems angelo vestri did the same."[break][break]

He doubts Vestri's departure has anything to do with Rowan, but why not scapegoat a man who was not here to defend himself?[break][break]

"I am free of my duty so long as Walsh thinks you dead. But I am honor-bound to report to him, as you well know."[break][break]

That's what had got them into this mess, after all.

It seemed as though he was in more control of his facilities at the moment, unburdened by the damage that had been done to his mind. "It took me a while to realize, but a part of me always knew that Suicune used my cooperation and desperation to save Xerneas, not because they had an interest in me." [break][break]

The admission seemed genuine, as though it were a thought formed far before he'd gotten a bullet in the brain. Doubts had been brewing in his mind ever since he'd left Team Rocket and the Legend choosing another seemed to solidify Rowan's suspicions into fact. [break][break]

"Why wouldn't Angelo be the same?" He agreed, a soft tone of sadness in his voice at facing this implied truth. "One of the only three people in the League that didn't treat me like I was subhuman, left without a word. Not even a letter, just showed up at his hanger one day and he was gone..."[break][break]

Cillian's final comment refocused him, taking a step towards his brother. "You take me in, then. Right to Walsh." Both hands pulled from his pockets, holding them out as one would expect to be when cuffed. "No risk for you, all of it for me." [break][break]

An eye steeled on Cillian's face, his features serious, holding back rage. "I'm sick of the League looking down on me, spitting in my face while they act like they are any better. I was a goddamned Beast."

It was cruel to take advantage of Rowan's vulnerabilities like this.[break][break]

Cillian knows this.[break][break]

"And yet it couldn't even remain loyal to Xerneas, in the end. Proof that it serves its own interests as much as it made you feel shame for doing the same."[break][break]

Even in Rowan's faltering state, Cillian's muscles tense when his brother takes a step toward him. It could be a trick. He's seen the Triad employ worse. But Rowan doesn't attack him, and his words are those of a man seeking atonement. He offers his hands, and Cillian does not hesitate. His SHADOWS contract from the alley's mouth to curl their umbral HOLD around Rowan, instead. Too tight to slip, not tight enough to hurt. The subconscious consideration from a brother who longed to mend a broken bond.[break][break]

"You were," he says, his voice velvet. "You could be again. Rocket will never look down on your strengths."[break][break]

Only manipulate them to their own ends.

Had Cillian even said that? Rowan could hear it so clearly in their voice, but a part of him knew that his brother's loyalty was firmly rooted in the doctrine of Team Rocket.[break][break]

Any momentary doubt in his mind dissipated when the shadows bound his form, pulling tight enough to restrain but not enough to suffocate. If Cillian wanted to kill him, he could have already. "No."[break][break]

A small smirk crawled over his lips, raising his head to look upon Cillian with a singular determined eye. "I will be a Beast again. I got there on accident once before, now I'm not afraid. Walsh and the rest of them will see what I am capable of."
